What is sustainable packaging? It’s packaging that reduces its environmental impact across its life: less material, recycled or forest-certified paper, inks and finishes that are easier to recycle, and a design that can be recycled in full. Whether it costs more or less depends on the measure: reducing size usually saves money, while certified or special materials can cost more. Promopack reviews your quote and cuts it by at least 10%.
What is sustainable packaging?
There’s no single criterion, which is why it’s worth being wary of vague labels like “eco” or “green”. In paper and board packaging, the factors that really count are:
- Amount of material. The most sustainable box is the one that uses the least board and fill to protect the same product.
- Fibre source. Recycled paper, or virgin-fibre paper with responsible forest management certification (such as FSC or PEFC).
- Recyclability. Single-material packaging recycles better than packaging that combines board, plastic and metal glued together.
- Inks and varnishes. Water-based inks and aqueous varnishes make recycling easier than hard-to-separate laminates.
- Shipping. Smaller, flat boxes take up less space in the lorry and reduce emissions.
If a supplier claims its packaging is sustainable, ask which criterion it meets and which certificate can prove it.
How much more does it really cost?
The honest answer is that it depends on what you change. Some sustainable decisions cost no more, or cost less; others do add cost. This table gives a rough idea of the relative effect on price:
| Measure | Usual effect on cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce the box size | Usually saves | Less material and less shipping |
| Remove plastic fill | Usually saves or stays the same | Requires a well-fitted interior design |
| Remove lamination | Usually saves | Changes the feel and shine |
| Recycled paper or kraft | Similar to conventional paper | Depends on the type and availability |
| Forest-certified paper | May rise slightly | It’s a chain-of-custody matter |
| Water-based or vegan inks | May vary by process | Ask whether it’s standard at the printer |
| Alternative materials (special fibres) | Usually rises noticeably | Only worth it if they add brand value |
That’s why the first question isn’t “how much more does being sustainable cost?”, but “what can I remove?”. Many companies cut cost and footprint at the same time by adjusting dimensions and dropping unnecessary finishes.
Which regulations should you bear in mind?
The European and Spanish regulatory framework for packaging and packaging waste is getting stricter, with targets for reduction, recyclability and reuse. In Spain, the waste and contaminated soils law for a circular economy and the EU packaging regulation affect companies that place packaged products on the market.
It isn’t something we can settle for you here: the specific requirements depend on your industry, your volume and the materials you use. Check with your adviser which obligations apply to you, and ask your supplier what composition data they can give you for each box. If you work in food, the material in contact with the product also has its own requirements; you can see the context on our food packaging page.
Where should I start to improve my packaging without spending more?
- Measure the empty space. If your box has a lot of air, there’s room to shrink it and save on material and shipping.
- Review the finishes. Lamination nobody notices makes recycling harder and adds cost.
- Choose kraft or recycled paper if your brand allows it; it’s usually a consistent and affordable option.
- Swap plastic for paper where feasible, for example in bags. Take a look at our custom paper bags.
- Ask your supplier to state which materials are recyclable and which certificates they can provide.
The same criterion applies to boxes: custom printed cardboard boxes with well-fitted dimensions and a single ink are, in general, one of the most affordable and least resource-intensive options.
How to avoid greenwashing in your packaging
Communicating sustainability without backing is a reputational and, in some cases, legal risk. These guidelines help you stay rigorous:
- Be specific. “100% recyclable cardboard box” is more credible than “eco-friendly packaging”, as long as it’s true.
- Back up every claim. If you say the paper is certified, have the certificate and the chain-of-custody number.
- Explain how to recycle. A symbol and instructions on which bin to use help the end customer.
- Don’t promise what you don’t control. If the packaging combines materials, don’t present it as fully recyclable.
- Measure progress. Cutting weight or material by a percentage is a figure you can communicate with confidence.
Sustainability adds brand value when it’s consistent and verifiable. An exaggerated message costs more than a slightly more expensive box.
What impact does each decision have on the final price?
To decide sensibly, rank the measures by impact and by cost. First come those that save money and reduce material: adjusting size, simplifying printing and removing finishes nobody notices. Next, those that cost little: choosing kraft or recycled paper and aqueous varnishes. And last, those that depend on your brand strategy: certifications, special fibres or new formats.
In this order, your packaging becomes more sustainable without the budget shooting up, and you can decide with data how far you want to go.
If you already have a packaging quote and want to know whether you can cut cost and material at the same time, upload it on our quote page. At Promopack we review it at the same quality, materials, finishes and print run, and within 48 business hours we tell you how much you can save. If what you’re after is a change of material, tell us on the form and we’ll assess it separately.
If you want to move to a more sustainable version, at Promopack we quote sustainable packaging in FSC or PEFC-certified paper and board, at least 10% cheaper than your current quote.
In short
- Sustainable packaging uses less material, recycled or certified paper, and can be recycled in full.
- Reducing box size and removing unnecessary finishes usually lowers cost rather than raising it.
- Certified or special materials can cost more, so compare case by case.
- Ask your supplier to state which sustainability criterion it meets and with which certificate.
- Promopack cuts your quote by at least 10% at the same quality, and replies within 48 business hours.
Frequently asked questions
Is recycled packaging more expensive?
Not necessarily. Kraft and many recycled papers cost about the same as conventional ones. What usually adds most cost is special materials or specific certifications.
What do FSC and PEFC mean?
They’re responsible forest management certifications: they show the fibre comes from forests managed to environmental and social standards. If you need them, ask the supplier in writing and confirm that the chain of custody covers your order.
Can a laminated box be recycled?
Many boxes with thin lamination are accepted in paper recycling, but the plastic makes the recycling process harder. If you want maximum recyclability, choose an aqueous varnish instead of lamination.
